Looks like it belongs on the side of a tractor trailer going down the highway. It's just not a good sports logo. LINK

So they aren't the Fighting Sioux anymore??? I figured the tribe would ok that similar to Seminoles and Illini, and Chippewas.

To make a long story short, one of the tribes in ND gave them the OK. However, the 2nd tribe fricked around and the elders basically refused to give any indication one way or another as to if they were OK with the school using the name. NCAA said that since both tribes didn't give approval, they had to change.

They had a long search for a new name and settled on "Fighting Hawks" several months back.

The final piece in the rebranding puzzle snapped into place Wednesday, when the University of North Dakota unveiled a new logo to go with the new nickname that replaced the one the NCAA said the school's sports teams couldn't use because it was insensitive to American Indians. The visual representation for UND's new nickname — the Fighting Hawks — is a white hawk's head with a green "ND" in block letters as its backdrop. The simple design was revealed at an on-campus ceremony emceed by University President Ed Schafer from UND's Athletics High Performance Center and carried live online.

Technically they couldn't force them to change....but they gave schools ultimatums that if they didn't change then they couldn't host post-season events and other things like that. So, effectively, they could force a change. This is why ULM changed from Indians to Warhawks and Arkansas St from Indians to Red Wolves.

Do you not remember when ULM was ULU Indians?

Pretty sure the NCAA had something to say about that.

The Sioux logo was a fantastic logo....created by an American Indian artist from what I understand. I don't see how using that logo or the name of a tribe is insensitive in any interpretation of the word. I'm also not a hippie.

I'm more offended by the blandness of the new logo than I am the profile of a human being as the old logo.

BS. I'd like to see them try.. We don't like your mascot so you can't host any events.. :roll eyes: Court of public opinion would destroy them.

They should have just kept their name and logo and said that their name "fighting Sioux" was a fictional tribe with the same name.

Bam, problem solved.

Should've gone with "Fighting Sue" with a caricature of Johnny Cash.

Just another example of condescending guilt-ridden white liberals being offended for people who couldn't care less about the issue.

Every 2-3 years we have to hear about just how horrible the name "Redskins" is. Yet, 91% of the only people who presumably should be "offended" either aren't or just don't give enough of a shite to have an opinion!!!

Another example of creating "social problems" that don't exist just so the SJW's can have something to "fix"
