At least we now know when the decline started.

I am sure you are trying to be sarcastic, but actually that year it became harder. Sometime in late 1996, the USMC did away with kipping during pull ups. Weaker body types could swing their bodies to propel themselves upward. This was replaced with the dead hang, where you have to all the way up and all the way down without swaying your body and keeping your legs interlocked behind you. Fortunately for me, I was trained to do this early that year by my recruiter. By the end of boot camp I could only do 15 dead hangs, while the kippers were doing 20-30 pull ups. A few months later, I was performing at 100%--20 dead hangs--while the kippers were now doing 10-12 dead hangs. 2 years later, the USMC decided to change the sir ups to crunches, it was actually much harder at first. It took some time to adjust.

The USMC is also the only branch to continue to extend basic training as the other branches have shortened theirs.
