I think Will Patton I. the Postman is supposed to basically be like a normal dude who rose to the occasion of leading on harsh times. I think they intentionally made him seem more like a Greek philosopher than atilla the gun. I think a lot of that movie is about rising above self and tapping into a greater power through unity and Patton's and Costner's characters represent two sides of that coin.
It gets a lot of hate but I've always loved that movie and over analyzed it.
