This is what ruins it though. You never got a sense that he was this evil unstoppable villain, which is really what villains are supposed to elicit in you.

A good villain, you should be thinking "there's no way the hero can beat this guy". He's too powerful, it's a lost cause. Which makes it more riveting when they finally do.

Never did you get that sense here. Actually, you get the opposite. You think "this dude's such a little bitch there's no way the dark side wins."

They should have played more on the conflicting part, and not made him look as weak as they did.

That is not at all what a great villain is supposed to be. If you want that, go with Doomsday. Tons of the all time great villains were plagued with insecurities, and that's why they do what they do.

Did you miss the part when they slaughtered an entire village of innocent people? Or he murdered his own dad?

Every villain has to be an absolutely evil 100% undefeatbale force of nature? That's sounds terrible.
