Marseille is a shithole. Parts of the city center are ok, where most of these clashes have occurred, but the rest is like a North African ghetto. Mixing that city & English fans is not a good idea. Can't wait until Russians enter the fray.

Yeah, Marseille was maybe not the greatest place to host England of all teams, but they've got a gorgeous stadium since the renovation is finished. I lived in Marseille for a year and it is far from a shithole. A port city, sure, but it's got a lot of history and a very diverse population that makes it a unique destination. I really enjoyed living there. Crime is an issue in some parts of the city but I never had any issues, although a fellow teaching assistant did get assaulted near the city center and got his laptop stolen, but he was walking through a really shady area near the port late at night. I had a friend get a necklace ripped off of her, but she got it back (it was a pack of stupid kids who quickly got caught by the police). With extra security I don't think that any of this will be a problem. As usual in Europe, people should be wary of pickpockets. Tourists won't go anywhere near the ghettos. I never did.
