The Marseille ultras are acting like full on c*nts now. Reports that they are attacking any pub that might have England fans in it.

Some Irish reporter is saying the pub he was watching the France match in was tear gased by cops bc the local ultras tried to storm it.

People from Marseille can be pretty hot headed, and the l'OM fans and ultras are a pretty low-brow group. The Dortmund fans who came for their CL game in 2011 had to get a police escort into the stadium. That said, there wasn't any hooliganism insofar as harassing fans far from the stadium or being destructive.

i've always read that french soccer is very "lower class" compared to the rest of the continent and the UK

I went with my pretty, Italian roommate to one of the games and she got lots of cat calls and jeers/whistles. It wasn't exactly a comfortable situation. My Scottish friend got his ticket jacked out of his hand by the trash kids that hang around the stadium and beg you for a free ticket. The middle part of the stadium (which was usually not very crowded) was more family friendly, but the virages (the ends of the stadium) were mostly 20-40 year old, super fricked up sketchy dudes. Compared to the Fulham, Chievo, and NEC Nijmegen crowds, it was wayyyyy different. Those were all very family-friendly. Marseille games reminded me more of the pro-Mexico crowd I experienced at the Rose Bowl for the Gold Cup final in 2011.

Marseille is a shithole. Parts of the city center are ok, where most of these clashes have occurred, but the rest is like a North African ghetto. Mixing that city & English fans is not a good idea. Can't wait until Russians enter the fray.
