I agree with your point that if it is low there is a Freon leak. My next question would be do the recharge kits actually seal leaks as they claim? Is it worth trying a recharge kit?
If it is electrical any idea what kind of damage I am looking at. Of course the warranty expired in April.

A charge kit won't hurt you unless you fill it into the red on the gauge that comes with it. I think for $25 it can't hurt to add it. I also know that you can get cheap AC checks in most areas. If the freon don't work you can do that.
(and to the people cringing at us using the term freon, I know the difference between R-12 Freon and R-134a refrigerant, freon is just easier to type and people know what you mean, and it will always be a cement truck to me.
