Ransomware is a type of malicious software designed to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid. This could obviously cripple a business so along with antivirus and other security based software most businesses back up files at least daily to prevent as much loss as possible. More often than not the targets are individuals. Unless you back your files up often, you'd basically have to pay whatever they demand in order to get access to your files. How bad would this screw your life up? Would you pay, say, $1000 to get access to your files or would you just say frick it and lose all your pictures, videos, important files, sweet porn stash, etc?

I don't think I would ever have anything valuable enough on my home computer that wasn't backed up somewhere online. So for 1K I'd at the scammers and just wipe the machine.

It's not an issue when you run it yourself.

Just coming from an IT person, you should have all of your pictures and important files backed up on either external drives or in cloud storage. It's just dumb to not do that these days. I have told this to so many people at work, who get malware like this. They just never learn.

For company's, spend the money on a good firewall, educate your people. And for goodness sake, backups, backups backups.....

Not at all. I have a robust backup system and can switch to a completely blank hard drive and be fully recovered in about one hour, most of which I'd be doing something else while the recovery process runs.

Probably about 15 minutes out of my life, more or less. I do practice runs 2-3 times a year just to be sure so I'm not even slightly worried.

Basically why I started this thread. Most individuals don't back up very often and don't really understand the real threat this poses. Think about having to pay who knows how much to get access to your personal files......Obviously wouldn't impact everyone the same way but would be devastating to some.

That's happened to ours before, but we have imaged based backups, so we spun up a vm, had a server running. Took the other offline and wiped it and restored it. wiped the infected desktops.

I have nothing on my computer that I would pay to have it retrieved. All photos are on my phone or facebook. Important files having to do with car/home purchases are on an external device. That's about it

Computers and tablets are dirt cheap these days. There's no excuse not to have a dedicated one for your porn viewing.

And, oh yeah, back your shite up, too.
