That's not balling in NY. Probably just exiting the cusp of needing to have a roommate to have an okay place in Manhattan with a reasonable commute.

As I've grown older the difference between the lifestyle of someone making 170k and 100k isn't that far off. The difference is the amount of savings that higher earner has, and the opportunities to generate other income streams, which will pay off handsomely as time goes on.
This assumes one or the other isn't an extreme spender or saver.
