but who actually looks at upvotes and downvotes? Maybe it's just me but i never even think to look at them (nor do i care).

I know some of us don't care but you see some posters who do that even go as way are editing their post when its getting down voted into oblivion.

You're missing his point. I don't think many of us care that much. It's that when you try to have a conversation with someone they resort to down voting you, or rebut an argument with citing the number of down votes on your post.
It's not the number itself. I don't think any of us care if we have 5000 down votes. it's the use of it to avoid dialogue altogether.
