I mean he was a great boxer but what else? He was known for refusing enlistment, and converting to a Muslim....
Always quick to display your racism and how stupid you are.

Yes he refused enlistment and it was fricking brave of him to do so.
Meh. I understand why he did it but to call him "brave" for doing it while he was making his living comfortably at that time is hyperbolic. I think he should be celebrated for what he accomplished as a boxer.
Lets save brave for those who really deserve it...especially in that context.

I am waiting for a reason outside of an insult, an insult shows a lack of intelligence.

Well I am not really worried about being like so I am ok with that...

Yeah let's call those troops who killed innocent Vietnamese in cold blood heroes

Nope, what did Ali do that was so important?
wow
Ali was the Babe Ruth of the second half of the 1900's man. He was much more than just boxing but if you weren't there you are not going to get it.

Well I'm not getting into a debate about politics or whatever.
Met him once as a kid and he was a helluva a guy, considering how famous he was...he acted like he needed us. Never acted like the former champ...just a regular guy, who knew he was special and had a duty to engage but not too special to not be a regular guy.
I've met a few other athletes, none as gregarious and humble as Ali. I do think he was a special athlete and deserves all the accolades and condolences.

Jesus christ. Yeah, all American servicemen in Vietnam were slaughtering innocent Vietnamese.
I always chuckle when people say these things. Until you walk the walk...you have no idea what "war" is like.

I respect him as an athlete. I respect him after his athletic career for what he has done. My only hang up is calling him "Brave" for dodging the draft. The man has made money hand over fist in his career as well as after and has reaped the fruits of what America offers more than any of us will ever know, more than any of the average soldier who answered the call whether they agreed with the policies of their country or not.
He didint like "America" and its policies during that era but that sure didint stop him from taking full advantage of the American way to the financial benefit of himself and his family.

Ali was stripped of his license and unable to fight in what should have been the prime of his career. I'm not sure I'd use the word brave but he stood behind what he believed in and most certainly did not make his living comfortably while doing so.

I do not know why you are being such a dumbass in this thread. Ruth was the first national superstar athlete. Ali was the first international superstar athlete.
But, you know what, I bet you are right. The person who knows about nothing Ali knows more than all of the people will be talking about him for the coming days. Jeremy Schaap was already on talking for a good bit about Ali (he and his father knew Ali well). You should listen before forming such a strong opinion about nothing.
