its a fact...There is nothing questionable about it...There are government systems running on antiquated hardware...Get over it

First off

This was discussed before.

The old technology does provide security though.

I watched a special on Sunday Morning on this a while back.

Basically it's because the intranet for the nukes is essentially unhackable as it is. And the last thing that needs to be hacked into is our nuclear system

That's 3.5 inch like those used in the 90s. 8" are much bigger and weren't encased (ie, are truly "floppy")

Boy this seems to remind me of mother Germany...... This is old news baw. Also it's un-hackable which is why they keep this.

This is common knowledge. It turns out that it is an unhackable system so why change it to a modern system that can't be protected.

Can't just go down to Office Depot and buy an 8" floppy drive.....

Yeah...You can

Do you have to fold the 8" floppy in half to get it to work in that?

well, if you want to get technical, we use ceramic discs to store most of the data anyway...

I'm just saying that drive is meant for the disk on the far right, these are the stored on the far left.

Now we have portable HDD but this media was originally made obsolete by CD's which are much faster and hold much more data but are not nearly as durable.

This is a case where durability and reliability trumps more modern advantages

Most companies still run on old mainframe systems. Why waste the money?

Honestly, they probably shouldn't even have access to any outside networks

no that's for the 3.5" you can't even get 5.25 anymore or especially 8".

My dad has boxes and boxes of punch cards from a program he wrote in school, I can't even begin to comprehend that.

Yeah, 8" was almost like a mini-record that you kept in the sleeve.

60 Minutes did an awesome feature on this about a year ago.

They talked about how the Air Force is charged with maintaining the nuke program (which I had no clue about). And yea, they showed the computers they use, and it was hysterical.

There has to be a way to phase this shite out. Pretending that they prefer "reliable to cutting edge" in regards to a floppy disk is like saying you prefer a horse to a car because it's reliable vs cutting edge.

Computers that can execute standard code without a floppy disk isn't cutting edge in 2016.

This tactic has been used in wars for centuries. Make everyone think you are weak and fragile.
