Why the frick would a snake want to go inside an engine cover? Was it on the ground?

Banded or brown water snake. Very common.

Saddles and side markings lead Mr. Dot to believe it's a very vividly-colored Prairie Kingsnake. Extremely dark though.

Was this in the western part of Lafayette?
