It's not always the thermostat and electric parts. The rollers that supported the drum and the drum belt were all going bad. The drum had slipped down some causing it not to operate correctly. When spinning, the drum rubbed against the metal of the front of the machine and caused friction plus it allowed the felt to be misaligned.
There's also a filter in the back of the drum on some units that gets clogged, Broke did you see anything like that? (not the regular lint filter but one mounted on the back of the drum itself.
