Wives turn into world-renown PI's for stuff like this. Unless you already bought a gift it's going to be very difficult to play this off. I'd come clean and then maybe accuse her of forgetting also since she said nothing this morning. If she's the type that has been testing you all day long then you're screwed. Come clean is only viable answer and it works.
