You should pick up the book Embers of war, very comprehensive although you could tell some left leaning when referring to certain aspects, but all history is told from some view point. All in all it was very informative. Possibly one of the top five I've read.
But in it it points out the certain neuances in the different communist enclaves and you see that in hind site sometimes there wasn't as much Soviet influence as the States at the time wanted you to believe. The Domino theory was a real thing but not something that was some well executed plan.

Just finished it and could not recommend it enough especially for people who are interested in how we found our way to vietnam...and why.
