Any Stellaris reviews from the TD gamers?

I enjoy the PI games and I'm anxiously awaiting HoI4 in June. In the interim, Stellaris was released 2 days ago. Anyone have opinions of it yet?
I searched a few pages back and didn't see anything.

I just bought it this morning, hopefully I can play some tonight and give some feedback. Everything I've heard so far has been good.

Except for trying to frick up EUIV recently Paradox is a really cool studio. The amount of community interaction they have is amazing.

Come back and give a review in a couple of days.

I have to actually find time to play first, and it seems life keeps getting busier and busier except for when I am at work...

It was recommended that I start a game with a low # of opposing AI to learn the game and that's been useful. I tried it with a normal set up the first time and got wrecked pretty quick. It's a fairly complicated game that will take multiple SP runs to find a strategy I like. Just researched new projectile weapons, great let's stick them on my corvettes, wait now I don't have enough ship power? I've been running into a lot of these situations.

I don't know anything about it but I did see this earlier from the developers.
Apparently people were mad that the IGN reviewer wasn't a big fan and attacked his credibility. Paradox noticed this and stuck up for him. It was a cool thing for them to do.
I've heard good things about the game, but the genre really isn't my thing. But after seeing Paradox make that statement I almost bought the game to support them.

I have it but haven't played it yet.

I'm guessing you haven't played many paradox games? This may actually be their most accessible game that I have played. I'll write up some more details on the morning.

Nope. Skipped out on CK and EU because they aren't my favorite genre. But 4x space games, god damn I couldn't resist

I can't seem to maintain enough energy credits to field a navy worth a damn

Yeah Stellaris puts a lot more stuff "under the hood" than any of the other Paradox Games.
If you have played EU (or CK) there is a lot you will recognize such as leaders (generals/admirals from EU). Being familiar with those games will make the beginning much simpler.
Overall the game and empire building feels really good. Deciding where to locate your colonies and structures makes the early game a bit more interesting than a lot of EU's early game (which can feel quite slow). They also have added "sectors" which allows you to delegate control of portions of your empire to the AI. You essentially have to use these since you are limited on how many colonies you can control directly. So there's a good mixture of more to do in the early game but a reduction the tedious micro-management.
The events and exploration feels pretty good.
War and diplomacy is probably the area where I am short on experience. The ship designer is a whole interesting minigame in and of itself. If you have played EVE Online it works a lot like that. I'm not totally sure what makes a ship good or bad, so I am just throwing out random designs at the moment.
The weirdest things I have noticed about war. It seems you can just exterminate other races, but you can only Vassalize them.... Quite annoying since sometimes I just want to take someone space entirely. You don't seem to have all of the limits and independence desire, so vassalizing another race is a good deal.
Also when you state a war goal, the opposing Party can basically surrender outright without asking you. So if your war goal is to "Liberate Planet X" they can just free the planet without letting you grind down their infrastructure. Interesting change since in EU even a very simple war goal opens the chance for you to go all total war on their asses.
Diplomacy I don't really understand. I don't know how you build up relations? So I don't know how to get someone close enough to me to join an alliance.
Overall I like it. It isn't revolutionary, but Paradox has really smoothed out the experience. Some people may not find it worth $40 though given the inevitable stream of expansions. Maybe see if the Summer Sale knocks it down to $25? If you are dying for a new Paradox game or a 4X then it is probably worth $40.

Are you building power plants and a power hub on your planets? Build solar panels on your space ports. Also make sure you drop a mining platform on every energy source you can find.
Energy credits a like money for this game, you build them up during peace and then blow a lot during war. Keep your fleets in orbit (rather than idle) so that you can save up during peace. Going -7 per month during a war isn't bad if you have 3k credits banked.
Also use frontier outposts to claim systems with high energy output for mining stations. Also there is a strategic resource you can find the lets you build awesome power plants. It is named B something. Research that.

I'm doing all that. If you put them in orbit it saves on energy credits?

I believe so? I think it reduce their maintenance cost.
In my first game I'm actually maxed on minerals and credits with a nearly full fleet. I plan on restarting because the diplomatic situation is fricked and I need to figure out how to manage that.

Nobody really hates me. I use embassies for very bad situations. Trade star charts and dumb shite like that. For fun I went and started a war just to see if I could win it. Ended up having to load the previous save. Their fleet power was over 8k and I was at 1800. I've maxed out my energy credits at 3500 so I do not think I could sustain a war.

There are techs (and buildings) that let you increase your max.
I've won a few wars, but I honestly started with too many empires and wasted a bunch of time at the beginning. Now that I've got the basics, I can put myself in a much better situation.

I read some reviews on steam last night. I mostly focus on negative reviews versus the fan-boy raves.
The biggest complaint seemed to be the PI pattern of leaving some things deliberately unfinished in order to make another 8 Euros in 45 days.
