It sounds like you're set on applying for positions without knowing whether or not they are open. It is possible to strike gold this way, but the odds are slim.
Use job search sites to find open positions for which you are qualified and that you think you would enjoy doing.
Don't be afraid of recruiters. I have contracted the services of recruiters on MANY occasions when I didn't get enough qualified applicants respond to ads on job sites. A good recruiter can serve as a contact in companies where you don't have one.
