I leave with a $200-$300 US and usually about $200-$300 in the local currency, you have to be knowledgeable about where you are going and what you will be doing, In Turks and Caicos I had very little need for money but in Thailand and Cambodia there are more places that don't take credit cards than do. As someone mentioned ATM are usually available.

I've always felt like it's more of a headache to look for a bank or ATM and I HATE paying ATM service charge fees.
I've never lost cash or had any stolen before but $1k is about my avg, but I honestly had no clue so many people brought so little. I still use my credit card for most things while on vacation and pre-purchase most of the things I can.
I guess I just feel nervous that CC companies can (and have to me while in Paris) shut down your card if you aren't able to verify a purchase....even if you've set a travel notification.
