Besides that...the "80% non-music major" statistic is pretty close for Tiger Band. I was part of this statistic myself for 5 years.

thanks for posting this, good to know.

Is this down from past years?

Also I would bet the 20% are the top of their sections, maybe I'm wrong but I would assume music majors would be better than non-music majors. Don't mean any disrespect, but I would still think even with that 80% figure, TGBFTL would take a step back if the School of Music was closed.

No. It's just whomever wants to audition. Yes, TB has auditions. And, every year, more people audition than they have spots for. It's not just about who can play their instrument better. It's also about who can actually match while playing. When I was in TB, we had an extremely good trombonist not make TB because he couldn't March. He was from out-of-state, N.Y. And his high school didn't have marching band. Good enough to make wind ensemble (top band) but not good enough to make Arab. Seems backwards, but it's a different set of techniques.

Also, many non-music majors are still fantastic instrumentalists sets. We had a trumpet player who wasn't a music major, but still madewind ensemble (rare, but happens). I believe he majored in some type of computer information something or another...CDSI, maybe?
