They didn't whatsoever. No director or writer in their right mind would want to be held hostage by a fan fiction writer. Hell, I don't think they want to be held hostage by the prequels. There is only one wink at them when Kylo mentions using a clone army, and that's it.

No director is going to compromise their creative vision because a few thousand nerds who are going to go see the movie regardless will be butthurt over changing some books few people have read. Deal with it.

It was more than "fan fiction" bro. You've obviously never read any of the expanded universe because you'd realize that the Thrawn trilogy, which should have been episodes 7-9, was a waaaay better story than the New Hope rehash
