My 3 year old has a decent understanding of death from watching Disney movies since every parent dies in them. He asked why his great grandmother lives alone and I told him that her husband got old and went to live in heaven with Jesus and he understands that. Don't complicate it for him. Give him a good answer that lets him asks questions later. You might not want to let him see the open casket though at that age.
