Anti-childhood obesity efforts have failed to stem the tide

Miami (AFP) - Childhood obesity is a persistent problem in the United States, and researchers said Tuesday they found no sign of a reversal in the rising trend over the past three decades.
In 2013-2014, 33.4 percent of children aged two to 19 were overweight, and 17.4 percent of those were obese, said the findings in the journal Obesity.
"Despite some other recent reports, we found no indication of a decline in obesity prevalence in the United States in any group of children aged two through 19," said lead author Asheley Skinner, an associate professor at Duke University's Clinical Research Institute.
"This is particularly true with severe obesity, which remains high, especially among adolescents."
The findings are based on an analysis of data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey.
The rates documented in 2013-2014 "were not statistically different than those from the previous reporting period of 2011-2012," said the report.
Meanwhile, the prevalence of severe obesity -- meaning the ratio of height and weight that makes up the ratio known as body mass index (BMI) was 35 or greater -- rose among overweight youth.
"Among all overweight youngsters in the 2012-14 reporting period, 6.3 percent had a BMI of at least 35," up from 5.9 percent in the previous reporting period, said the report.
"Another 2.4 percent of those had severe obesity, defined as class III, which was consistent with an adult BMI of 40 or more," compared with 2.1 percent in the earlier report.
In other words, some 4.5 million US children and adolescents have severe obesity, "and they will require new and intensive efforts to steer them toward a healthier course," Skinner said.

So they took data from two years and called it a trend?

JIm is correct. have a close relative getting a phD in this subject. It all begins at infancy (usually).

childhood causes obesity? anything is possible in Barryland... but I think Anti Obesity efforts aimed at Children have failed because of Moochy's Menu.

From what I've seen at work...this isn't shocking at all. I see too many lazy parents(remember that I work in a hospital that serves mostly very poor and uneducated people) that just shut up their crying baby every time....by sticking a bottle in their mouth. Overfeeding babies and not thinking anything is wrong with that. Fat baby becomes a fat toddler. Lazy parents again...toddler throws a tantrum...give them sweets to shut them up. Put soda or juice in their sippy cup cause they won't drink anything else. Throws another tantrum for dinner...fast food to shut them up. Unhealthy eating habits have been established early on and food is used to placate the child.
And yet people wonder why there are so many obese children?

Obesity rates have leveled off. Even though they haven't really declined much, it ha stopped increasing and isn't as big as a problem compared to the early 2000's.

Not for children. If that was the case...explain why we are seeing a huge increase in teens being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes?

According to the CDC yes they are, at least as recent as 2010-2014. It's one of the reason why the DGAC has transitioned from focusing on weight management.

Bingo nurse- lazy parents. dont realize, or dont care, that a newborne's stomach is the size of a golf ball. Just feed it to shut it up. then feed them solids as fast as they can. and dont breastfeed. it all leads to obesity. Its a complicated mess. I do not believe its the government responsibility to fix it, but educating the uneducated does seem to help.
The problem is getting worse. The only figures that say they are leveling off are only doing so to make michele obama feel she has done something with her life.

Well heres the problem. The efforts need to be pro-childhood and anti-obesity. They have it all twisted.

Today's kids eat way too many processed carbohydrates and high-fructose corn syrup. Google "Low Carb, High Fat" and see the past/future of nutrition.

So not only has Obama failed miserably, his wife has also done the same

The FDA has been a joke the whole time with their food recommendations. Who cares if they recommend shite food right? Well I'm sure most schools follow these guidelines, so the kids learn at an early age how to eat incorrect.
