the language of the trolling is different. But is being called a c*nt really all that much worse than calling a guy a fig and telling him to kill himself?

Exactly. People are just looking for that shock factor that they know will get under someone's skin. It's not that they are harder on the women just because they are women per se, it's just that the material is an easy shot to take. That doesn't mean it isn't "more" hurtful, it's just easy to go there, so they do. Like you say, you can call a guy a fig, but what can you really do that's on the same level. Telling a guy "I hope you get raped" would be a very interesting tweet I guess.
