I'd really love to now how you can come to that conclusion since the hit is basically in a completely dark area of the screen and incredibly low resolution.

This is agree with to a point. Although, keep in mind that they did slow the video down just before the impact, so it may not be as bad as it seems in the video.

ETA: Looks to be roughly 3 seconds real time, that's a pretty delayed reaction.

The term "violent" is relative. I'm not going to argue your definition vs. mine. What I'm saying is that, IMO, on a scale of 1-10 of rear end collisions, this would be a 3. The original accident was a 1.
