I hadn't seen this video until now. I think you can tell a few things from the video.
The hit was not violent. But, it looks intentional based on the delay before between Smith applying the brakes and Hayes.

I'd really love to now how you can come to that conclusion since the hit is basically in a completely dark area of the screen and incredibly low resolution.

This is agree with to a point. Although, keep in mind that they did slow the video down just before the impact, so it may not be as bad as it seems in the video.
ETA: Looks to be roughly 3 seconds real time, that's a pretty delayed reaction.
