I wouldn't say they are a thing of the past, it's still a very viable enterprise. I think the problem is that they lost sight of the fact that for a console to have a long shelf-life, they have to accept the fact that they are going to lose money on it for the first half of that shelf-life.
I remember reading that the previous 2 generations didn't finally hit the black until like year 4 or 5 of their existence and it's because they used expensive parts in order to "future proof" the consoles. The current generation was already regarded as being behind the curve.
Now, I could be wrong on this, but the current consoles seem less prepared for the long haul than the previous 2 or 3 generations.

I think they made smarter design choices like X86 architecture but overall it's true. They launched $400 machines and the PS3 for example launched at $600. Factor those prices in with inflation and you can see how they aren't as powerful as before.
