However, what irks me is why in the f*** did we waste a 3rd pick on Grayson then?

Now this, this is a different story. I was never an advocate of a QB last year as I felt it was too early. I do agree it is and will be a wasted pick.

it will be fun thinking of the early draft picks we could have had watching Grayson and Lynch with their clipboards....as Brees continues to ball and our defense continues to suck.

Oh yeah, cause the defense is such an easy fix. Fact is this isn't a one year fix. No defensive player we take in the 1st is going to transform this defense from worst of all time to competent, at least in the time frame Drew has left. Also, say we take a QB at 12. Why can't we take defense at other picks? You're making it seem like the 1st round is the only round that matters. There are solid defensive players we can get in the 2+ round range.

We can draft our future QB with a first round pick when it's time for Brees to retire

Again, waiting until you HAVE to is a risky play. Sure it might work out, but a majority of the time you wind up with a bad situation where you're forcing players who aren't ready to start and stunts their potential and development. Then you're stuck in QB limbo. Or year after year with a top 10 pick you're hoping you can get "that guy". Is that really what you want? If Payton feels drafting Lynch (OR Wentz) now gives us the best shot to stay competitive post-Brees, I can't really argue with that.

Grayson was a horrible pick. Wasting a 3rd was just utter stupidity.

If we hit on two picks in the first three rounds, it absolutely could transform our D in the next 1-2 years.

...the other rounds matter but the 12th pick is weighted for obvious reasons. First three rounds weighted much more than others. Likelihood of landing a starter is much higher. You understand this, I know. We shouldn't waste an early round pick.

What if we land another Cam Jordan...or heaven forbid, a Von Miller (I know he was the second pick), but a great pass rusher or LB could change the D.

Or maybe a Terron Armstead equivalent at G in the third round. Will we nail these picks? probably not, but two QBs in the first three rounds two years in a row who have no chance to get on the field for at least two seasons is asinine.

We'd be shooting ourselves in the foot, closing the window on our own. Doing the job for Father Time before it's time.
