I believe losing a friend to cancer and then having another guy I know through friends get diagnoses a few weeks ago has spiked it, because I usually don't really think about this stuff.

yep.
same thing happened to an old friend.
two people we knew died of prostate cancer within two weeks. my friend now reads spiritual books about death and dying. EVERY DAY.
