Question about Roman formations in battle.

Was watching the original Spartacus today. In the final battle, the Romans start out deployed in their checkerboard quincunx formation. I understand the advantages of that formation as it allowed for more flexibility and allowed the troops to more easily maneuver during a battle as it progressed.
However, the cohorts then run together and form a solid line to face the slaves. What is the purpose of forming the solid line when they give up the checkerboard advantage?

Harder to breakthrough when playing "Red-Rover, Red-Rover"...

Wasn't this asked on Reddit the other day?

A tighter formation may be less maneuverable but would provide a better defense.
My guess is that a defensive posture was chosen on purpose.

The ones in front not only get pushed forward by the one behind, but the ones behind get to jag their spears in front of that shield wall protecting them. That is the whole idea behind a Phalanx.

The quincunx formation allows for an initial offensive attack and then for you to quickly and easy fall back into a solid line defense.
The single solid line defense is much easier to command and control once the battle begins.
