Wife and I will be renting a car in LA for a week and cruising up the Pacific Coast Highway this summer. Looking for some good stops for food and lodging. Will probably hit a couple Vineyards (have some connections from work) and would like to make it to the Redwood National forest before we have to turn around and head back to LA(son is at a camp there).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hearst Castle is really interesting. Even stopping on the side of the highway between SLO and Monterrey and taking in the scenery is amazing. Green fields and cows at the foothills to the east, and a sheer face to the west with the ocean just below. The town of Monterrey is pretty nice, and has a Presidio worth checking out.

Pebble Beach is really beautiful.

McWay Falls is a must see too.

My family and I made this exact trip going in the opposite direction this past summer. We started in San Francisco and ended up in San Diego.

Hilton San Francisco Downtown/Financial District, San Francisco

*Golden Gate Park
*Fisherman’s Wharf
Alcatraz
City Lights bookstore

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (rides and attractions) before Monterey (1.5 hours from SF)--rest stop

*Monterey Bay Aquarium (.75 to 1 hour from SC) (LINK $40 adults, $35 students
Cannery Row

This is well worth the trip to Monterey...we spent 2 days there. Its next to Cannery Row.

San Simeon (1.75 hour drive from Big Sur)
Piedras Blancas beach--elephant seals (just before San Simeon--may not be a lot in July)

If you aren't paying attention you will miss the turn off. Easily the most hilarious part of our trip.

*Hearst Castle (45 min. per tour--might want to do downstairs and upstairs, or just downstairs--plus 15 min bus ride each way. Tours are $25 per person)

My family loved it...but I thought it was meh.

Malibu (3.5 hours from San Simeon, 1.5 hours from Santa Barbara)

It was okay not great.

Santa Monica Pier

Amusement park on pier (LINK --no admission to get in

This was pretty cool...and muscle beach is real!

Port of LA--USS Iowa,

Long Beach

Staying on the Queen Mary

It was very cool to stay on the Queen Mary.

Corona del Mar (1 hour from Long Beach)
*Tidepools LINK

We screwed up and arrived too late, but I understand the tide pools are awesome.

San Diego (1.5 hours from Corona Del Mar--1 night)

LINK

We went sea Kayaking which was fun.

Once you get to the scenic part of the PCH you will find yourself stopping and checking out the pacific ocean fairly constantly.

We spent 9 days slowly working our way south. Probably one of our better trips as a family...

Made the trip from Monterey to San Diego down the PCH for 10 days...Monterey is beautiful and the aquarium was cool...Pebble Beach is gorgeous. Big Sur is also a must see! San Diego was my favorite though!

One thing I can say is that with stops, with one week you would probably need to take i5 to get back from redwood NP. It's about an 11 hour drive that way and a lot longer on the PCH.

If you don't want to go that far north, there are lots of redwood groves and parks on the way up there. Redwood NP doesn't really have anything that's so much more spectacular tree wise than some of the other state parks.

wow, great responses. Thanks, Everybody! I will actually start the trip out in San Diego to visit some family and then drive up from there. Might not make it all the way up to Redwood NP. Might just spend extra time in San Francisco

Will be in San Diego for a conference in mid Sept. Planning on taking a couple of days after the conference to drive up the coast toward San Francisco. With only a short time, what are the can't miss spots for outdoors minded couple?

TIA. Have traveled a lot but never to Cali.
