Another one which quite a few people have mentioned here about picky eaters relates to the same recipe.
I made the casserole for a couple/few family and friends get-togethers over time. One day a friend calls and tells me her husband loves the casserole and wants her to make it for him. I give her the ingredients and she was astonished because it included mushrooms (cream of mushroom soup) and Dave HATES mushrooms and cannot eat them.
She decides to do the recipe and just not tell him. Over the years this has become a favorite dish for their family and the kids request it all the time and especially for special occasions (birthdays, graduations, etc).
Dave calls me one day. He's at the grocery store and has decided he wants the chicken rotel casserole. When giving him the ingredients I purposely save the mushrooms for last. The long silence on the other end of the phone after the last ingredient was hilarious.
All those years of telling people he did not like and could not eat mushrooms, trying to convince his kids that they did not like or could not eat mushrooms and all along one of his favorite dishes had mushrooms in it and everyone knew it except him.

Another funny Dave story is he always does special orders, yes even for fast food drive-throughs. One day while we were still youngsters on the way back from the lake we stopped at Sonic. He ordered a burger with nothing but tomatoes and lettuce or something like that. When we got home to eat and he opened his food, Sonic had given him a bun with tomato and lettuce only - NO MEAT !!!
It was funny because the environment around there the rest of the night was similar to if we had won the lottery as a group - except for Dave anyway. I guess after you pull to the side enough to have spent multiple hours pulled to the side, any little bit of payback is grandiose.
