Sounds like this depended on how he was raised and how he self-identified himself.

CNN (4 or so years ago) had a segment on how people of mixed races self identified themselves.

He was raised by his white mother, Indonesian step father, and white grandparents in Hawaii and Indonesia.

Why he pretends like he grew up on the Southside of Chicago I have no idea.
