Depends on who did the work and what transmission it has. The three speed non over drive atuo is a tank but they leak and that is usually what gets people in trouble.

I would be more worried about why it failed in the first place. If someone beat it like it owed them money the transmission might have just been the first thing to go.

98 is a good year if it's cheap enough. Go ahead and buy a bushing kit because if they haven't been changed yet you're going to need to address that soon. Check for evidence of a leaky heater core, and check the color of the coolant. If it looks like there is brown sludge in the overflow bottle, find another peej. Run you finger inside the filler neck on the top of the radiator, if it's brown or gritty, walk away quickly.

It's old enough to vote, so the unit bearings are almost certainly at the end of their life span as well
