Basil doesn't keep well in the fridge in my experience, at least not what I pick in the yard. The store bought starts going bad as soon as you open the plastic container. I find that it starts to wilt and then turns black.
Rosemary will keep in the fridge, but air exposure will also cause the needles to dry.
Sometimes, when I have fresh picked or grocery store basil with stems, I put it in the glass jar in the window with a ziploc bag over the top like a greenhouse effect, somewhat. I read it somewhere and it also works.
