1st year girl has a crush on hallmate but he just wants to be friends.

She create an imaginary boyfriend to make hallmate jealous. She even sends fake texts from the phantom boyfriend to the hallmate.

Plot fails.

She claims that the fake boyfriend raped her in an effort to win her hallmate over.

Plot fails.

Her grades dip as the semester progresses and she is ultimately called into the deans office to explain herself.

She grabs onto the most convenient lie she has in her arsenal.

It's at this point she gets pushed into mandatory post-rape counseling. As part of this, she shares her 'story' with womens groups on grounds. They treat her like a hero. He remarkable story grows with each retelling.

The following summer a reporter for Rolling Stone is shopping for cases to build an article around. A student activist, who would later go on to work for UVa, tells her about Jackie's alleged rape.

Jackie tells the story to the reporter.

In the weeks leading up to the release Jackie gets cold feet, she's worried about getting exposed. The reporter refuses to remove her account from the article though.
