Looking at the manual "bull's eye" sight in front of the canopy, I'd say this is indeed a P-40.

I think you're right.
A long time ago I had the good fortune to see a P-40 close-up. One of my cousins in Monroe had a friend who worked for some big shot who owned "Hold'n My Own" a P-40E, and kept it at the airport there.
I have quite a few photos of it, even got to sit in the cockpit for a bit. The first thing you notice is the gunsite on top of the cowling.
