Wade Phillips on Whiteboard Explaining the 3-4 Defense

I came across this video by Wade Phillips, the Defensive Coordinator for the Denver Broncos. Here, he gives a nice little introduction for those of us who are not too familiar with the 3-4 scheme. The video is ultimately an advertisement for a DVD which can be purchased at CoachesChoice.com.
Enjoy!
Edit: Sorry about the missing link earlier. And yes, it will become immediately obvious when browsing similar videos that different teams, including Phillips' own teams from season to season, run the 3-4 differently.

LaCouture said Aranda even runs a formation with just two linemen with their hands on the ground. “That’s when I’m standing up,” Neal said. “We’re going to look like the Broncos.” The Super Bowl 50 champions from Denver employed a base 3-4 scheme under coordinator Wade Phillips, and the unit ended the season first in the NFL in total defense.

Hey, check out this video of Jennifer Annoston and Kate Upton going down on each other.

Not every 3-4 is the same just like our 4-3 was vastly different from most teams

Which linebacker group comes out of the game for the nickel formation?

You would expect the Will to be replaced by the Nickel.
Often the Jack will come back down to the line of scrimmage.
The Sam would normally follow the TE to the right or left.
This would essentially result in the same 4-2-5 "Nickel" package we have run for years.

Which is funny because we are in the nickel alot, and essentially this defense would be no different than previous, no?

The easy answer is the Sam is most commonly replaced by the nickel back (assuming your nickel keeps a 3-man front). That's true even in a 4-3 if a 4-man front is maintained for the nickel package.

There are many different variations of the 3-4. The 3-4 depth chart you have for lsu is basically just a 4-3 with our de just standing up. IMO we have 1 DE that is athletic enough to drop in coverage(Key). If you always use the Jack to blitz then youre taking away the advantages of running a 3-4.

As far as the front six, the difference is only slight:
• If the Jack remains off the line, he functions as the Will and the front is a 3-3. I'm not too familiar with how teams assign duties in the 3-3.
• If the Jack slides down to the line of scrimmage, he becomes what was previously our WDE and the front becomes a 4-2. However, we might expect to see him in a standing position with his outside foot back and his inside foot near the line, rather than in a 3-pt stance.
• The same plays and coverages can be run from either alignment, which is the point. This might mean that we only rush 3 linemen even though we line up in a 4-2.
• The SDE can also back out and play coverage, sending the Jack to rush instead. But this is nothing new, even for a typical 4-2-5 Nickel. We've heard talk over the past month from Neal Lewis saying that he will sometimes play like a linebacker. Heck, we've even seen our DTs in previous years back out of there and disrupt a pass using a spy technique.
And yes, we ran a lot of Nickel last year and should expect more of the same this year. Every team we play will require us to enter into the Nickel at some point and some teams will force us to play Nickel or Dime for the majority of the game. Even Alabama has been running a lot of 3-wide under Kiffin.
We should be running a fair amount of 3-4 against the Wisconsin offense, which still uses a fullback, and then Jacksonville State will require us to perfect our run blitz in order to shut down their read option. I would hate for Aranda's 2nd game as our DC to be marred with an Auburn-esque debacle.

Indeed, especially when his fingers keep on rubbing against the board.
