More government = less advancement. You can even see it happening now in the western world. We advanced so quickly because of the government we created when we first formed. But as things continue to become more regulated, advances in things like medicine slow down. This happened to the eastern part of the world much sooner, and they've been under strict control by people who want to keep advancement to a minimum to keep power

The Bay Area is easily the most technologically advanced region in the world. The government is heavy there but it also supports entrepreneurship. Government can get in the way of progress but it's not a clear cut, bigger is always worse thing.
