There's been talk of doing that to College Drive here in BR. It's basically a way to move more traffic without having to add lanes. If you look at how it's configured, it basically allows for protected left hand turns onto and off of the highways without a need for red lights.

It's been in operation for several years at the Airline/Siegen/Sherwood Forest intersection and has really made a difference. I understand that these are commonplace in Mexico and other countries.
