One thing that has not been mentioned yet on the board is that removing a wisdom tooth is best done by a specialist...an oral surgeon. He has all the necessary equipment like gas. I'm not sure a dentist has gas. Your dentist may just want to inject you with a numbing agent, which may work or might not work very well.
I had 2 wisdom teeth taken out one time and I was given gas and when I woke up I asked the dentist if he had started yet and he told me that we were already finished. Gas in the way to go.

All of y'all just need to go to the damn dentist.
I'll just add that a pericoronitis is very different from an abscess. There is not a large area of spreading infection that you are fighting. Numbing is easier than with a "hot" tooth. The fix is to have it removed.

One time I had a tooth ache. Then it went away.
Hope this helps.

Thanks. I'll definitely get it out. Just not sure about it spreading infection. There were some nasty stories online about how pericoronitis spreads very easily

Don't read the Internet when you get sick.

Gas isn't exactly "necessary" equipment. Taking out an erupted or partially erupted 3rd (wisdom tooth) is no different than any other molar provided the roots are not dilacerated (curved) and/or any anatomical structures (IA nerve or sinus) at close proximity to the root apicis (depending on if upper or lower).
If you've got a competent dentist, all should be fine.
As said earlier, you can go either way. Take it out now. Minor risk of partial anesthesis. Or wait a few days. Depending on the opposing tooth trauma, which caused the pericornitis, the inflammation in those tissues may not resolve in the first place.

I just dont' trust these guys trying to make a quick buck.
You should just pull it yourself since you don't trust your dentist. Film it with your phone and post it up on Youtube.
You probably need it taken out anyway, he won't make any more money if he pulls it today or next week. Actually, if he puts it off he can charge you an extra office visit so it will cost you a bit more.

I leave it up to my patient. Most want to wait for the infection to clear up first before extracting. The main factor is an infection makes it harder for the local anesthetic to work fully. So there is the potential that your dentist may not be able to get you completely numb. The other factor is your pain level. Some patients are in so much pain, they just want the damn thing out no matter what. If you chose to take the antibiotic, be prepared to wait 2-3 days for the symptoms to subside unless you call your DDS and ask for a Medrol Dose Pack to take in addition to the antibiotic. This will decrease the swelling and inflammation much more quickly.
