I need you to elaborate on this. There were other groups around that time that were pushing the "grunge" guitar sound just as much as Nirvana was. What was so unique about Cobain's playing?
I think as a musician he was respectable, but in no way did he make any significant contributions to guitar playing. Certainly not in the same way EVH or Hendrix had.
ETA: Underrated guitarist/group from that era - J Mascis and Dinosaur fricking Jr.
