Bumping a very old thread. Looking for a new project to do in my spare time post deer season while my kids are still young enough we aren’t booked up every weekend.

Strongly considering buying a bare bones Carolina skiff j16 or similar (open to suggestions) , and building/ converting it into a flats boat/poling skiff.

I’ve done a bit of research and know j16 doesn’t pole very well, but tbh I’d be mostly running the trolling motor anyway. The allure is obviously the entry price- can be found in LA and Fla for less than $5k with a running motor, and the chalmation in my blood has some sort of deep affinity for Carolina skiffs I can’t shake.

background: I have super quick access to hopedale and shell beach marshes without crossing open water, and we have 24’ bay boat and 21’ Carolina for that anyway

Anyone have any budget friendly builds they care to share pics of? Or tips and suggestions when shopping?
