This is the correct answer. It's a staggering accomplishment that meets all of your criteria. Modern Library (I think) has excerpted the Siege of Vicksburg and the Battle of Gettysburg in two separate smaller volumes called respectively, The Beleaguered City and The Stars In Their Courses. They might be a good test read to confirm that the trilogy is what you're looking for.
