The majority of that is a perfectly legitimate argument but to go down this road you have to admit that Alleva or someone giving him orders hamstringed Miles on Chavis's contract. There is no way around that. The bolded part is complete speculation. Chavis and Brick didn't coach RBs or WRs, and Miles didn't suddenly decide to structure contracts that were more appealing. That hypothetical works both ways, who's to say Les's hires wouldn't have looked like this all along if he were able to offer better contracts? Aranda is a perfect example as I just pointed out. Les wasn't scared straight last year when Aranda was told he was the number one choice. You guys simply can't spin that one. He both refused and accepted LSU in the span of a year, before this "fire" was lit under Les, and the only change was the contract Miles was allowed to offer him

I corrected the "fear" reference already since I didn't intend to express that. But there is no way any of the initial changes take place if Chavis signs the contract that was on his desk for weeks. That was up to Chavis. Les had nothing to do with that decision and it was the linchpin of everything that happened afterwards. If Chavis stays the coaching changes would have been mostly insignificant since openings would not have been available and we would have been buried in bad money contracts. Cam would have been the next to be signed. I'm glad somebody stopped it whoever it was.

Les almost got himself fired. Alleva didn't coach and call those defenses against MSU and AU that year, or try to use band aids to keep the defense working and the offense sputtering along. We lost four games in the conference the year Chavis walked and if the big money boosters didn't think something needed to happen it would be hard to imagine what it would take.

I think you're missing the point that Alleva made Chavis and Les's decision for them that Chavis was leaving. It's widely known that Chavis wanted the Miles clause thrown out and Joe refused, going so far as to not even meet with Chavis about it which he thought showed a huge lack of respect. Whether you jumped on the 3rd and Chavis bandwagon or not as an LSU fan you have to admit that's not the way to treat a guy who has done a pretty damn good job calling your defense for 8 years.

You can argue that Chavis leaving was the catalyst for these good hires and it worked out great for LSU in the end, and I would agree, but that's a different issue from how supportive Alleva was of Miles before Nov. I think it's painfully obvious that Steele type hires would have become the norm if Alleva and whoever was instructing him had not pushed all their chips in and lost. In fact I think making phone calls for potential replacements to Miles was a sobering experience for them, and they realized it was no easy or cheap task to do better than Miles. I will give them credit for quickly getting behind the guy afterwards, I'll be the first to admit I thought having an AD that could get things like this done would take getting rid of Alleva to repair the damage done.
