I see that some kits come with shock extenders or new, longer shocks. I'm assuming this may soften the ride back out.

I mean, it's just like putting new shocks on a regular truck. I put new ones on my truck when I bought it at 100k because the stock ones were worn out. Cranked the bars a few thousand after that. You don't NEED them

I doubt new shocks/longer shocks would smooth it out, your cranking the bars up is stiffening the spring. I turned my 94 and 04 up but did not max either out on the adjustment. Both rode fine a little stiffer which is ok with me. 1/2 tons.
