If you want the simplest, most dependable service, you still need cable. And you don't really save a ton of money unless you're willing to get dirty and use pirated streams, etc.

I think if you're wanting everything in one place, then you have a point. My setup:
1. PS Vue
2. OTA Antenna with Tablo

PS Vue is the most rock solid of the streaming services. I have tried DirecTV Now, and it isn't stable at all. Sling is way too expensive. YouTube TV isn't available in my area, so I can't comment on that.

The one problem I ran into with PS Vue is that they do not carry any of my local stations. So I purchased an antenna (CM 4228HD) and mounted that up on a pole, and that runs to my Tablo. The Tablo is a network device that allows you to connect to it from pretty much any device. The model I got was the 4 tuner, and you can connect an external HD to it so you have DVR functions. So I get all of my locals (CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox, CW, etc...) in crystal clear HD.

We also have Netflix and Amazon Prime.

One thing that I'll probably end up adding to my setup is subscribing to PhiloTV ($16/month) so I can get the Viacom stations that PS Vue doesn't have.

Overall, I'm still saving money each month versus what I was paying for with DirecTV. The only inconvenient item is that there are multiple sources to watch TV and we would have to jump between apps to see what we had recorded. To get around that, I wrote a desktop application that allows you to enter in all of the shows that you watch, and it will automatically send email reminders on what shows we have coming on for today (show name, which network, what time, and synopsis) as well as what all comes on tomorrow.

With cutting the cord, you can make it as simple (or as complicated) as you want. My wife isn't a techie at all, but she doesn't have any problems navigating things. As an added bonus, it's super easy to setup a TV on the back deck during football season without having to move a cable box/receiver outside to go with it.

I was a Directv customer since the late 90s. Cancelled the service after trying out Directv Now.

1. Directv Now is an inferior product to Directv when it comes to features, navigation, interface and DVR.
2. I miss the channel numbers, which I got use to. Easy to type 206 on the remote and go to ESPN.
3. Recording shows and series on Directv Now can be wonky. Some series will not record.
4. No option to add an extension to live events you are recording.
5. Getting to the guide with the Fire remote takes a few extra steps. No button to just pull up the channel guide.
6. Can no longer rewind live TV. Have to record the show then you can.
7. Even though they offer my local channels, they give me locals from another city. I have opened two tickets and still have been waiting weeks for a resolution.
8. App gets flaky sometimes. I had to clear the cache for the directv Now app on my Fire TV the other day to get it to load.

All that said, I'm not going back to cable or Directv. I'm saving $70 a month, I have the same channels, and it is good enough. I have hope that they will improve the service and get it much closer to the original Directv. If not, I can try out other streaming services.
