It is absolutely a soap opera, but with production values of a film and very talented cast of actors. Beyond the soap-like storylines, it touches on the class distinctions of life at that time, and the ever evolving plight of the common man versus the entrenched aristocracy. It is interesting look into the world of hundred years ago. Maggie Smith alone is worth the watch.

this is my take on it as well. I think I stopped in middle of Season 4.

My thoughts exactly. I enjoyed seasons 1 and 2 (although it started slipping in season 2). I couldn't make it through season 3.
