I do surf. Leashes keep your board with you after a Wipeout.

However in big waves most people forgo leashes because it just drags you around in the washing machine

Correct. Though not for certain, the theory is big-wave surfer Mark Foo got tangled in his leash when he was killed at Maverick's about 20 years ago.

That's incorrect. Big wave guys almost always use leashes these days. How do you think you even get outside at a spot like jaws on a day like that? There's no channel. They ditch ghe board,dive deep and hope their leashes holds.
