I'd much rather have a "soft" guy than one that intentionally hurts people. I would be ashamed to be a Saints fan if we had a Burfict on our team. Just because someone is tough or physical doesn't mean they are good.

The idea of Ladarius Green in Sean Payton's offense gives me a chub. Biggest issue with him is staying healthy/concussions. That worries me but I'd still love it if we took a chance

Forte....should we? Use him like we did Pierre...
Alshon jeffery.....meh prb cant get him

You watch Denver, I know you see it
You watch Carolina, I know you see it
Watch Seattle, I know you see it
Bal, Pitt, SF etc over the years
I know damn well you know exactly what I'm talking about and it is an attitude from the coaches down to the players. We simply do not have that grit and desire to physically dominate the opponent. We don't want to
You cannot continue to avoid these players, every great D has a loose screw.
Changes that need to be made will never be made. New D line coach, former player/tough LB coach. Willis may be that but Vitt needs to lose his job still. We have Jeff Ireland so maybe he can convince Loomis and Payton that you need some tough physical men to win.
I do not believe we will ever win again unti some attitude is brought to this football team. Carolina has that attitude, they've spend 4 years building while we drafted soft player after soft player.

Jermaine Kearse and Ladarius Green would be great.

Who's the loose screw on:
Denver? Talib? Miller? Ward?
Carolina? Hardy was it, Norman? Johnson? Kuechly? Davis?
Seattle? Sherman? Thomas? Wright?
Baltimore? Suggs? Lewis?
Pitts? Polamalu? Harrison?
SF? Smith? Willis? Bowman?
The center piece of every single one of those defenses is a LEADER on defense, not a nutcase or headache on the field. Lewis is the exception with the murder stuff.
Who was our loose screw? Galette? won nothing with him.
2009? Sharper? Vilma? Fujita? Smith? Greer? None were "loose screws" at the time. Sharper being a rapist didn't mean he was a loose screw ON the field like Burfict.
Our offense had a looser screw in Shockey than that defense ever did.
If you want a loose screw, why not go for Meriweather or Suh, they're total nutjobs on that feild that have and will never win.

My point exactly, Gates isn't some spring chicken to not have passed the torch. Graham went from situational/learning to play football his rookie year behind Shockey to record breaking tight end the next.

Every name you posted pretty much exemplifies what I say except Kucely
All those guys are tough and mean (on the field)
And for your question. Umm James Harrison??
Now that is an a-hole we need on defense
All those guys will pop you in the mouth and talk shite to you about it after. All those guys put fear in the opponent, a guy like Cam Jordan will laugh and joke he is not mean or physical. Solid player just not what I'm looking for, Wolfe for Den is a better example.
Gallete is not near that player foh dude he was soft (on the field) also, routinely washed out in the run. He did not bring a physical presence to the team.
Last player we drafted that fits what I want is Vaccaro, problem is he fricking sucks
2009 was 5 seasons ago it's irrelevant
Today you need tough, mean physical men or you will go nowhere. Even NE has it on D.

You compared those guys I listed to Burfict, who is a nutcase on the field and even to his own teammate. As to why he went undrafted.
quote:
All those guys are tough and mean (on the field)
Surefire tacklers, good coverage guys, and defensive stalwarts =/= tough and mean. Harrison was mean. Lewis and Suggs were mean. Once the game adjusted, Lewis was on the tail end and adapted to not head hunt. Harrison and Suggs took time and adapted as well.
None of the guys are headhunters or dirty like what Burfict against Brown (headhunt) and Big Ben (kneeing his shoulder repeatedly). Pacman against Cooper (dirty) not "mean".
San Fran were given a "mean streak" because they hit hard, within rules, and were solid tacklers and coverage linebackers. None were dirty players or played outside of the rules of this day.
You want a leader who is good on the field and can rally his guys off the field. Browner isn't it.
Hell, the best defensive player in the game JJ Watt is more loud than "mean", but this comes from the guy who is hating on a 1200/9 season from a 2nd year player.
Posted on 1/25/16 at 3:56 pm to htran90
JJ Watt brings attitude and energy to his defense. Guys like him are infectious, they rub off on the team and they begin to play a certain way. Screw the talent we don't even go after guys of that mold.
Need some put you on your arse and get in your face after players. 2013 in stretches Lofton, Vaccaro, and Bush collectively brought that kind if energy to the team. Every snap those guys at least attempted to bring to the opponent. Vaccaro specifically brought a new energy to the team, you need to routinely find those spark plugs.
And as for your end statement once we get Treadwell all will be fixed.
Pretty much what you say also but that starts at the coaching and ours don't get it done.

JJ Watt is also the best defensive player in the league. He is both talented and a leader, yet he isn't a dirty player.

Lofton was also part of the worst defense in NFL history (2012).
Vaccaro has to continue to improve for people to listen to him. Nobody wants to listen to a guy who gives up a 3rd down due to penalty either (Browner).
So what "tough" or "mean" guy in free agency are you wanting to turn this team around?
Posted on 1/25/16 at 4:17 pm to htran90
Jason Jones
Hardy
Malik Jackson
Antonio Smith
Wallace Gilberry
Chris Clemons
Mike Devito
Vinnie Curry is finesse but very good at rushing
Red Bryant
Berry Coefild
Damon Harrison
Brandin Mebane
Nick Fairly
Henry Melton
Al Woods
Terrance Knighton
Sam acho
Bruce Irvin
Courtney Upshaw
Aldon Smith
Vincet Ray
Zach Brown
Damaro Davis
All upgrades over some of the trash present. Most if not all these guys instantly bring a new attitude to the field. In fact most of them are the on field violent defender I'm looking for.

So Breaux is garbage too? Gotcha
Posted on 1/25/16 at 4:37 pm to Brandincookem
You listed 20+ guys and of those list, I can glance and tell you there's a few things:
1. Splashy guys that we'd use all our cap on a single player
- Irvin, Jackson; more than likely Irvin goes to ATL or stays in seattle. Denver won't let Jackson leave unless its too much. In which case, we can't spend too much on a single player
Yeah you list guys like Jones, Harrison, Rey, Brown, and Davis, I can agree on. Younger guys who are productive.
2. Aging/Over the hill guys that aren't great
- Clemons, Smith, DeVito, Cofield; pretty much all are journeymen. You're better off with Kevin Williams who actually showed he can still play heavy snap counts
3. Guys who aren't leaders or "mean streak" players on their own team. Hell, more or less rotation players
- Curry, Gilberry, Acho, Upshaw, Mebane; Upshaw has been a disappointment, Curry is up and down, Jones is average at best, Gilberry is on a decline, Acho has been underwhelming, etc. Some of the players, sure you can get them as rotational at best.
4. Guys who are system players who have bounced around since they left the system or just weren't very good
- Bryant, Fairley, Woods, Knighton; case closed, they've all sucked. Hell we DRAFTED woods.
5. 100% true nutcases and guys who can't get their head on right no matter how many shots they receive. Hell you can't even depend on them to suit up.
- Hardy and Smith; off field issues, side line issues, and can't depend on them when you need it. Look at Dallas, Dez Bryant isn't the craziest person on the sideline that tells you someone is an issue.
Yeah you list guys like Harrison, Rey, Brown, and Davis, I can agree on. Younger guys who are productive.

Never once did I mention Breaux, but he's just as great of a leader as Cam Jordan. Neither are the loud get in your face like Jenkins, Harper, Smith, Vilma, and Fujita were.
Hell, Lofton was a good leader, but he was also one of the reasons why we got torched by slot receivers, TEs, and crossing routes since 2012.
You want a good leader that is fine and dandy, Browner is your guy. I rather a guy who can produce on the field like Jordan.

We've been so bad on defense for so long it is hard to imagine the saints with a rounded team of good, hard hitting, fundamentally sound players. It is just hard to imagine and it is extremely frustrating.
I have a hard time blaming our players for the finnesse/softness it starts at coaching. The guys on the defensive side of the ball haven't got it done and we continue to not shake things up there. Things like warapping up Seattle and Carolina practice specifically, we do not. Seems like thier guys Sprint off the snap like track racers, ours get off the line slow as shite. That is effort lacking
Ireland will find physical players, the SEC talent, guys weve passed on for fricking Martez Wilson's and Akiem Hicks' of the world.
Just can't see it, the day we have a legit top 5-10 unit( not flukes of '10 and '13) Brees will be long gone
Can't blame the bounty shite either knowing Loomis would have wasted those picks on soft bust anyway.
Great feedback though in all seriousness

The saints had one of the youngest defenses in the leagues, don't call them "garbage" they need some time. 80-90 percent of people don't just prance into the NFL and dominate, calm down and let them develop
